I'm sorry. I did not specify exactly how I connect.

1. If I need to download data from my desktop machine (connected to our
lan at work), to my laptop, I have a spare straight-through utp
cable with which I connect my laptop to our hub. Using this connection,
I ftp or wget the files I need from my desktop to my laptop.

2. When I reach home, where I do not have a hub, I disconnect one
machine from my home lan, and use the cross-over cable to connect
the desktop to the laptop (the desktop has a combo card -- utp and bnc
connectors are both available, the bnc to connect to the thin ethernet,
the utp to connect to the laptop.)
