Ah, an emacs advocate. I've been curious of emacs ever since, but I can't seem to find something to use it for. I did try the emacs (console) once, and those strings of keystrokes are amazingly confusing. It's even harder to figure out than the code I was working on. Oh well, maybe next time. As with TRAMP, I don't think I'd need it, since the farthest file I'll be editing is from a machine within the LAN.
