And I would like to add, vi is the editor that exists in all most all unix variants. You might not like it (I like it.) and and you have your own preference of other editors, but as Rick mentioned, you have to at least know the essentials of vi. Nothing is more humilliating than to edit some files on a honky big iron unix box and say to your boss, duh, i can't. I don't know vi...
