These days, it even does editing files across networks, split windows, 
file/directory browsing, client-server cooperation between copies of
vim, tables, UTF-8 character sets, and ASCII art!

Yep.  I mutter and complain when I have to step down to other vi's like
nvi, but knowing _some_ vi variant is an essential skill if you need to
do remote machine administration.
