If you liked pico, you'll enjoy nano even more.
http://www.nano-editor.org/  It's an open-source, improved rewrite of
pico (which like pine is unfortunately proprietary-licensed.)  It's 
more stable, faster, and includes quite a number of improvements.  Also,
it can be run in strict pico-compatibility mode, turning off all of 
the author's enhancements, if that's desired.

On all my systems, "pico" is a symbolic link to the nano program.  Users
almost never even notice they're no longer running plain ol' pico,
because the emulation is perfect.
