I have a single processos Athlon 1200 here at home. For more than a year,
we've been running it with the default heat sink and fan. We usually get
50C-55C at idle, usually 55C-60C when running d.net on the background. Of
course there are times when the weather is really hot (we don't run the
airconditioning system always, electricity is very expensive because of PPA)
I have a program that checks temp every 15 sec and pauses d.net for 10 min
just incase temp goes beyond 60.
I noticed that using the default heat-sink and fan many of the posters here
get a temp beyond 60C. Well, my younger brother made an improvised air duct.
We're only using a no-name midi-tower ATX casing but With the air-duct, we
were able to reduce the temp by 5 to 10 degrees. :) He just took some
plastic sheets (yung medyo matigas) and separated the air in-take of the fan
from the rest of the board. Everything run cooler since then.
Of course we were able to reduce the temp further by using a Volcano 7+.
Even at medium fan speed, we get a max of 47C when playing 3D games or
compiling Mozilla or the Linux Kernel. ;) At idle, it's only 40C-43C.
The improvised air-duct really helped a lot. :)
