Gee, if TeX is to C as LaTeX is to C++, then PostScript is the assembly
language both of these languages compile into. :)

Personally, I use DocBook except for heavily mathematical documents.
After years of doing LaTeX myself, I'm positively frustrated by the way
the W3C is handling MathML. It's too clunky compared to TeX/LaTeX. I'd
try to get as much mathematical stuff from TeX conventions into XML
as far as possible, as opposed to whatever the hell they're doing with
MathML.

Only trouble with DocBook is that the only free XSL formatting objects
processor out there still bites sometimes.
