hello all,

What do you use for bugtracking/helpdesk software)? I've been looking
at a lot of packages lately and I haven't chosen one yet. I'm sure a lot
of my problems with installing stuff have to do with misconfiguration or
incomplete configuration. some of that is my fault (didn't RTFM or the
README or the INSTALL file), but a lot of it is the software's fault too
(e.g., see #4 below, php.ini)

i've been dropping one package or another because of the following:

   1. features missing. i need login authentication, flexible permissions
(some users can view only, others can create tickets, others can
assign tickets, there should be policies for who can close a ticket,
etc). this isn't as big a deal though. for every three incomplete
packages, there is one with all the features i need (warning: 98%
of all statistics are made up).

   2. cannot configure (i'm probably just doing the wrong things, but i
can't get some things to install), e.g., i gave up on bugzilla long
ago because installing it then required major magic. i may look
at it again though. i think configuration is better now.

   3. can't download dependencies (i'm sometimes having connectivity
problems with some CPAN server or other and some dependencies
just don't come down the wire).

   4. php software was written for 3.x, 4.0.x, 4.1.x and will need some major
surgery to get it working with 4.2.x. e.g., register_globals is off
by default and *it*should*be*off*. and some globals in 4.0.x and 4.1.x
were renamed in 4.2.x. i know about directory specific php.ini files,
but most php software doesn't come with those (a lot of them just
assume that php is configured and installed similarly to the author's
       development setup :).

I can't go with payware, since I'm just looking around and testing stuff.
So, what do people use and recommend?
