I can enumerate some _real_ _world_ java apps that are fast and resource
friendly:

Eclipse - http://www.inq7.net/inf/2003/may/30/inf_29-1.htm
prVSweep - A Swing-based Sophos AV scanner (If you want to see one you
can drop by at my office).
Any Java client apps written in SWT.
Any server-side apps that are properly threaded. (OpenJMS, SwiftMQ,
Softwired iBus etc.)

Excellently written java apps.
