Quoting Lito A. Lampitoc:
I have a friend from DOST from one of the institute there, he's been
using Linux since 1996 and I mentioned to him about Bayanihan Linux, he
seems not to be impressed at all about the effort because he told me
that it is only based on RedHat and why does people daw from ASTI can't
create their own distro from scratch, besides it is more reputable and
will add more prestige if they create one. He even told me that ASTI

Do we really need to reinvent the wheel when one is already available? Is it machismo? Yes, it is possible to create one from scratch but Bayanihan's developers will be spread too thin and the distro they will produce will be very likely left behind by other desktop distros (with more developers and funding) and will soon become irrelevant. I think ASTI's decision is correct. By basing Bayanihan on an existing and widely used distro, they were able to deliver results in such a short time. I can remember the Bayanihan maintenance and development list was started just last June 2002. Today Bayanihan is making a considerable impact as an OS closer to the heart of Filipinos than any other that existed before. I know someone planning an internet cafe entirely run by Bayanihan Linux. IMO, Bayanihan Linux project is right on track. One friend of mine was readily convinced to switch from w*nd*ws when he saw Bayanihan Linux. He recently purchased a new PC and by choosing Bayanihan Linux, he was able to save almost P5000. RedHat alone wouldn't have convinced him to switch, he told me. As more and more applications for BL are adapted and later on specifically written for Filipinos, Bayanihan Linux will later on make a big name of its own and RedHat will then be remembered as its ancestor. For the time being, as the project's developer base is not yet that big, it is a smart choice to base Bayanihan on the current RH distro to be able to benefit from RH's development and stay ahead.

Some time ago I read Mr. William Yu's post at the Bayanihan
dev list about basing BL to the current RH release, I was
skeptical then but now I realized its merits.

Just my 25 centavos.
