I've indeed found that RHCE certification, alas, doesn't correlate very
well with basic Linux knowledge.  

I might also point out that database administration is always a somewhat
specialised area.  No matter what *ix you've admined, when you suddenly 
find yourself in charge of a (serious) database's health, you have some
reading to do.
