Would it be safe to recommend a RHCE to maintain/fix a Slackware-based
DBMS server (Firebird or MySQL) machine? My concern is that a RHCE might get confused due to the absence of RH-specific tools in a Slackware installation. If RH certification training mostly involves using RH-specific tools and not enough general Linux knowledge, then an RHCE will not necessarily be able to /properly/ maintain a system based on another distro.
I'm interested in people who have cross-distro maintenance 'battle
stories' (in a commercial setting) to tell.
what's the slackware specific with your app in the first place?
some probs that i've encountered for cross-distro (DEB/RH/LRP/CYGWIN) maintenance involves the ff:
- package mngt sys - version numbers - directory structure - init scripts
And now my worst problem yet, porting Linux Apps to Windows (embedded XP)!!!!!
it really sucks, don't you think? now i'm reading migration docs on microsoft's website. and later on, i'm going to test MS SFU 3.0 (Services for Unix).
why? coz recently, some of our foreign clients were convinced by MS regarding TCO, etc..
and i think i'm starting to believe MS or maybe i'm just being poisoned???
grrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
