firewall rules.  do you allow packets from the other host to your wireless IP?

what does 

   cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all 

say?  if it says 1, then your box will ignore pings.  can you telnet into any 
other services?  e.g., 80,110,25, whatever services are running and are 
available to the other host.

i am not on the linux-newbie list, so i don't know if this is more
appropriate there.  maybe someone else will tell you in private :).
