I hope this isn't off-topic, but I would encourage all of you to write to 
your favorite newspaper and congressman (check first if he got elected), 
and government officials about the dangers of software patents. Yes, I 
realize that it will most likely go above the heads of legislators and 
functionaries, but some are IT-savvy and jay listen. The enbwspapers are 
always looking for good copy and a well-written letter tied in to a 
previous news story or article may get printed in nthe Letters to the 
Editor section.

Also, there are the IT publications. You might want to try sending an 
article to them. No guarantee it will get published, but it just might. 
You never know.
