You know.. one man's poison is another man's...

What I do these days is accept the stock Red Hat install, then un-install 
everything I don't need afterwards via rpm -e; the cascade dependencies 
will strip almost everything away with semi-frightening ease.

of course something as basic as Pine requires a ton of dependencies 
(kerberos, openssl...) but i can get a Red Hat install down to 1GB or so. 
no sense beating myself over the head, hard disk is cheap.

once have a nice clean no-X install, just mkkickstart to clone it to other 
boxes.
