Actually, same here...My KDE (kmail) can't display Japanese font, but i am
using thunderbird anyway so that's no big deal for me eventhough its
working on earlier slackware and kde versions.

Not with me, I have no problems with sound on slackware even when it was
using the OSS modules, until now with the ALSA modules. hotplug seems to
detect most of the the soundcards that i am using. What do you mean ALSA
is not working anyway? are the modules loaded? or the modules are loaded
but you dont have any sounds? In Slackware, it is muted by default, so you
have to unmute it using alsamixer (hit the 'M' key) and run alsactl store
to save the volume setting on the next reboot.

corruption of MBR? it looks like your windows is taking over the bootloader,
are you sure you havent reinstalled your windows OS? (dual-boot)
I havent experienced corrupted yet.
