at our lab we have similar specs, and I can't really call them slow. I
installed slackware 9.0 with fluxbox and the speed is reasonable because
I removed all unnecessary bloat. well, it has more to do with the
kernel, daemons, and apps than the distribution itself, I believe. by
the way, what is your swap size? maybe try changing that--it might help.
try finding lightweight versions of apps if you can.
