i believe the kernel 2.6.x would significantly improve performance, i have a pII, quite abundant with RAM though ie 160MB, 4GB HD --- been using mdk for sometime but havent moved really to x-windows until the 2.6.x kernel.

at our lab we have similar specs, and I can't really call them slow. I installed slackware 9.0 with fluxbox and the speed is reasonable because I removed all unnecessary bloat. well, it has more to do with the kernel, daemons, and apps than the distribution itself, I believe. by the way, what is your swap size? maybe try changing that--it might help. try finding lightweight versions of apps if you can.
