Are you using TightVNC? Have you tried NoMachines NX Server
(http://www.nomachine.com/)? It has been said that is faster than VNC. It is not exactly free but the same company has released GPL code. An
offshoot project called FreeNX is due for public release. It would be

yup, i have tried every variation of vnc that i could get my hand on the net and still remote desktop is snappier by a greater magnitude than *vnc. and everything goes through a vpn tunnel from our office here in manila to our client site in finland. i havent tried this nomachines nx server but ill try to read about it. our current need is something like this:
1. free as in beer. our client is doing some cost-cutting and they dont have the ready cash to fork for licenses.
2. allows remote administration of existing session.
3. is secure.
4. can be installed on a lot of workstations (for support).
terminal services dont support #2 (afaik) so im using number 1 & 2 as an argument for keeping vnc installed on our workstations.
i forgot the fifth condition: it should be installable in the windows platform. initial hits on freenx/nomachinenx doesnt list an available version for windows. the freshmeat page only shows source (hmmn, maybe ill try compiling this sometime), rpm, debian and osx packages.
