I highly recommend Sennheiser headphones. I've owned several pair over the years, and they have been great. I am currently using the Sennheiser HD590. These sound great, have a good balance of highs and low, as well as some of the most comfortable pads that I've felt on a set of headphones. I'm not sure how the HD590's match to the current product line, but I think you could take a look at the HD555 and the HD595.

I'll speak for my personal preference here. I really don't like sound canceling and closed type headphones. In my experience, it makes for a disorienting listening experience. That being said, there is definitely a place for those types (airplane, server room, etc). Some people really like the complete isolation that you get.

I really prefer open headphones. The sound quality is better, and I don't feel like I've completely disconnected from my surroundings. I've found that even a low level of sound is enough to mask out most noisy environments, yet give you enough awareness of your environment that you can respond to the people around you.
