Unless that method actually melts the plastic and not merely remove the metal reflective coating it doesn't actually erase the CD. (You'd have to replace the coating to read it, but the data is not stored in the metal.) Unless it's a CD-R/RW. For a hard drive simply bending the platters is enough as well, but you gotta take the time to open it up first. But why bother with that when you can just use a bulk eraser? Non-invasive yet totally destructive.
