SlimCD is awesome! I got it to boot a POS Compaq 350MHz with 384MB RAM and plan on throwing it in a closet to serve up some of my favorite tunes already ripped to FLAC. I can fake my way around Windoze and Mac environments but haven't the slightest clue about Linux, especially DSL. Perhaps some angelic soul can help me out with a few pointers.
I have no clue how to add music already on my harddrive to my SlimCD library. I can serve Internet Radio, but that's not what my goal is. Under the server configuration tab of the SlimServer web interface I cannot find the right path to my music folder. I've tried every permutation of hda1 with both \ and / in front of and behind but can't get the SlimServer to make these tunes available. The Windows 98SE path to my music is C:\SLIM but this Linux stuff is driving me crazy. I've also tried having the server rescan my library to no avail. Yes, and before anyone suggests I forgot, I mounted the harddrive using the little black control panel thingy on the bottom right corner of the desktop. Also the help on saving the server settings isn't terribly helpful. I have no clue where to find the file to save my server settings to, and even if I could find it I wouldn't know how to open or edit it. Ideally I would have SlimCD boot automatically using the dsl toram parameter. It would then automatically configure itself for the same static IP address of my choosing on my home network. It would then remember exactly where my music folder is and load any new music found there. It would also retian any and all configuration changes I have made from previous sessions. For example it would remember that the SoftSqueeze running on my G5 is named "G5 SoftSqueeze" and not 192.168.0.21 and that the WinAmp running on my Window XP PC streams mp3s at 128 with a quality setting of 8 so as not to bog down the server (there's just nothing out there quite like MilkDrop). Maybe I am trying to get it to do too much, but I believe these desires are reasonable (and would make this software really kick a## for how I plan on using it). FYI I don't plan on installing SlimCD to the hardrive as I use the W98SE installation to transfer my FLAC files onto the harddrive over my LAN (I have a hard enough time doing this from a Windoze machine to another Windoze machine and plan on leaving the transfer from Windoze to Linux stuff for when I'm feeling mighty lucky- I'm talking lottery winning lucky). I appreciate any help or suggestions any of you have, and thank you in advance for your time.
