Several months ago I ran into this same sort of problem - no sound from AlienBBC. Even with the great help from the folks here, I eventually gave up. The wall I encountered was that I noticed socketwrapper would start up and then die. I tried all the firewall disabling stuff, etc., figuring that maybe it was blocking socketwrapper from running. But no luck. The other piece of data I had was that it worked when slimserver was running on a laptop equipped with the same firewall software, etc.
I decided to take another run at things a couple of days ago since the same problem was interfering with my ability to use the XMRadioOnline plug-in. Well, I had forgotten about some parental control software I have installed on my slimserver box. Supposedly, this software does not interfere with things when I'm the only user since I'm exempted. I guess the CyberSitter folks hang out with the Zone Alarm folks. Once I actually uninstalled CyberSitter everything started working. I have no idea what exactly the problem was, but I'm guessing CyberSitter might plug into the IP stack in such as way as to screw up socketwrapper - or something like that. So, check your parental control software.
