It needs changes the custom-convert.conf and it needs a few other files some of which are OS dependent. What OS are you using for LMS ? What version of mplayer ? It's been a few years since I needed to use mplayer in LMS and it needed a messy solution to overcome some mplayer quirks (e.g. output messages to stdout which get mixed into decoded audio, not dying when requested - leaving zombies) - they may be fixed in current version. If your OS is OSX - then it's going to be added problem.
