I don't get the full picture yet. So if single clicks would cycle through modes (rep all, rep single, off/DSTM), without changing any DSTM settings; wouldn't it make sense then that a long-press (independent of current mode) is only ever used to access DSTM settings (on/off, sources list)? That would indeed make sense, and would make an additional config setting superfluous - I'd simply never use the long-press.
