If any of you classical music listeners is interested in trying out the
latest Custom Scan(1.18) and Custom Browse(1.22) I would appreciate
some feedback.
The thing I would like feedback on is a new "Dynamic Tag" menu template
that is delivered with Custom Scan 1.18. It is a completely dynamic
menu, you can select which tags to include (both SlimServer standard
tags and custom tags), these can be browsed in any order and any depth.
At any level you can step out to "Matched Albums" or "Matched Songs".
It's currently a bit slow, so I would suggest that you try it out in a
smaller collection, it is usable in my own collection with about 3000
tracks but is a bit slower than the normal menus.
Personally I currently feel that the menu structure in this new Dynamic
Tag menu is a bit unfriendly. The problem is that on every level you can
select to:
- Select a tag to browse further down in
- Jump out to matching albums
- Jump out to matching tracks
The result is that the menu gets quite deep compared to the standard
browse menus available in SlimServer and Custom Browse. The advantage
of course is that you get full flexibility in which order to browse.
If anyone have a better idea how to do the menu structure, I appreciate
the feedback and ideas.
Menu structure example of an expanded menu, values between <> are real
"objects":
Code:
--------------------
Conductors
Composers
----<Composer1>
----<Composer2>
--------Conductors
--------Ensembles
--------Works
------------<Work1>
------------<Work2>
----------------Conductors
----------------Ensembles
----------------Matched Albums
----------------Matched Songs
--------------------<Song 1>
--------------------<Song 2>
------------Matched Albums
------------Matched Songs
--------Matched Albums
--------Matched Songs
Works
Ensembles
--------------------
So the browsing in the above example works like:
1. Select if to browse by Conductors, Composers, Works or Ensembles
2. The user selects to browse down into Composers and then get a list
of all available composers
3. The user selects <Composer2> and a list of available tags is shown
again, this time only Conductors, Works and Ensembles is shown since
there is no track which have two composers in the collection.
4. The user selects to browse further down into Works and get a list of
all available works related to <Composer2>
5. The user selects <Work2> and a list with Ensembles and Conductors is
shown, but not Works this time since no track belonged to two works.
6. The user selects to browse down into Matched Songs and get a list of
all songs which is related to both <Composer2> and <Work2> and can
select and play any of them.
The logic is that when you get the opportunity to choose which type of
tag to browse into, only the tags which have at least one track below
based on the previous selections is shown.
Anyway, I think the behavior needs to be felt to understand everything,
so please try it out and get back with some feedback and ideas.
