To answer my own question: changing the bandwidth only impacts on AlienBBC. So to conclude, the solution to the problem of using AlienBBC and Slimserver when on a slow connection is:
1. Stop Slimserver (right click on the slimserver icon in the taskbar and choose "stop slimserver"). 2. Go to custom-convert.conf in the Plugins/Alien directory, right-click and choose "edit". Use Wordpad or Notepad. 4. In the 3 RTSP lines, change the "-bandwidth 10000000" option to "-bandwidth 40000". Choose a higher or lower number depending on your bandwidth. Additionally, increasing the cache from 128 should decrease the risk of rebuffering during play. 5. Save and close the files. 6. Restart Slimserver and test.
