Thanks danco, Solution 1 allowed me to rename mplayer_intel to mplayer. However it seems that this version of mplayer (MPlayer OS X 1.0rc1 from www.mplayerhq.hu) does not work for me. Although I can select bbc streams in the server web interface or on the player they do not play.
