I was looking at a similar approach for a Silverlight implementation because it doesn't really do any heavy 3D stuff, just resizing and moving the images (no rotating, which is one of the more processor-intensive tasks).
The issue is when you try to blow these things up to an HD resolution - the framerate would be low and the lack of anisotropic filtering may be distracting on a big screen.
