I must also check the firewall settings and log - just in case it is stopping some packets streamed by waveincmd. Will do that tonight. At present - the external CD player is connected 'analogoly' to the linein inputs on the server motherboard and waveinput streams the wavin:1 - which is the linein. I can monitor the sound at the server via headphones on line out. I know the purpose is to provide CDs in the kitchen for 'er indoors' but I found the quality of the sound card audio too poor for my taste - both when streamed and direct from the headphones. To improve the sound quality I was going to buy an spdif to usb interface if I could find one - or a better usb analogue input card - but only if the basic analogue in test worked OK. I have been looking at icecast and may have a go with that as a free standing option - just to take one level of complexity out of the situation and maybe prove a point. Thanks for all your help.
