If you want me to look closer at this performance issue, enable "debug"
logging on "plugin.trackstat" and "plugin.customscan" in SBS
Settings/Advanced/Logging and then rate a track and post or mail me the
server.log file.
Remember to reset the logging to the default "warning" level
afterwards, else you will soon get very large log files.

I think playlists are the easiest way available out of the box. If you
need to do this often and knows a bit of programming, let me know and
I'll dig up the alpha version of the MediaMonkey plugin which is
floating around these forums somewhere. I'm not using MediaMonkey
myself, so due to this I don't plan to finish it myself, but if you
know some programming and want to give it a try, just let me know.
