Not sure what you mean by "extra bpa plugin".

The problem is with availability of ffmpeg builds.  It is clear many
repositories have version of ffmpeg which are old - version reported
have varied from 0.6 to 1.2 

The best solution is an up to date build of ffmpeg ( or possibly
aconv).
Where ffmpeg/aconv does nto shutdown - the solution is to use a shell
script to ensure ffmpeg is closed down - it has higher overhead.  The
files can be part of the installed plugin but user will have to rename
file to make it active
