ecasound might be better but if system is loaded (Pi is stuttering) then
it is unlikely to help.
white noise is often a sign of a mismatch of format - wrong endian,
wrong sample rate etc. - all depends on the your specific setup but you
have given no info.

You need to track down why it is stopping after 3.5 hours.  If it is
always the same duration then the issue might be how your system is set
up and what transcoding is happening but you give so little info it is
hard to make any suggestion.
