ecasound might be better but if system is loaded (Pi is stuttering) then it is unlikely to help. white noise is often a sign of a mismatch of format - wrong endian, wrong sample rate etc. - all depends on the your specific setup but you have given no info. You need to track down why it is stopping after 3.5 hours.
