Playing a program has two steps (i) Find content - BBCiplayer finds content from BBC 7 day feed. BBCiPlayerExtra find programs from unofficial feeds and can access 30 day or more content. Once content is found (i.e.an URL) - both plugin pass the URL to a 2nd part of BBCiPlayer to play. (ii) BBCiPlayer 2nd part implements playback of Flash, DASH and HLS. The playing part takes an iplayer:// URL and decides which format to use and then plays it. This part of plugin also obtains metadata - again independent of format. BBCiPlayer uses an official BBC feed - Extra uses unofficial feeds (i.e. old offical feed now unsupported or raw web page info) which means BBC can change format as they wish. I expect the Extra to die completely sometime as BBC are slowly changing the web interface underpinnings to a more secure private feed. > Do you recommend using DASH rather than HLS? At one point there was a difference in audio quality so user preferred DASH but I think now both use the same AAC content. Main difference between DASH and HLS: (i) I can't update HLS as I don't have any reference player so no new BBCiPlayer feature on HLS (ii) 1.5.x DASH can use HTTP/1.1 with a single TCP connection per stream whereas HLS will still use HTTP/1.0 with a TCP connection (and DNS lookup) per 6 sec chunk. This can result in rebuffering in live streams at busy time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104672 _______________________________________________ plugins mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
