Derek got up and followed her.  "You can't leave right now," he said his
becoming very authoritative.  "It is impossible for me to leave at the
moment.  Nick and Julia are still out and Alex is resting."  It hadn't
escaped him that Nick and Julia had left the house and he was not leaving
without knowing that there was someone capable of looking after things.
Alex was certainly in no shape to do it.
