"I'm sorry I scared you," Kat told her. "Really I am," there was a lump
filling her throat and making it hard for her to talk. She couldn't believe
that Miranda hurt them. even though she loved them, she just couldn't
believe it was true. Miranda was her friend and wouldn't do anything like
that. She couldn't remember much about the other place, except for the
funny stars that melted because of her necklace. "Miranda wouldn't hurt
me...she's my friend."

"Kat," Julia waited until Kat met her gaze, her own solemn but honest "She
hurt Derek and she hurt me. And she did try and hurt you."

"She took a part of you and a part of Derek.... your essence for lack of a
better word. She was trying to force Derek into doing things and hurting
him if he tried to help you. If I hadn't had broken her hold on him.... it
would have been worse.

"And she was making you do things too. Saying things you would have never
told your father or Derek."

"A friend would never make you lie, or sneak out or go somewhere they knew
you weren't supposed to go."

Julia had stopped by her room before coming here and took the object she had
picked up there out of her pocket, holding it in her palm.

It was the crucifix she had given Kat.... the one her own father had given
her when she was a girl.
