"Milo is with us," Derek told her.  "We're on our way."  He felt steam
building in his head.  Sloan could be such an ass at times.  How dare he
drag his mother into this, whatever this was.  "Don't let Sloan bully you,"
he added.  "I'll let Nick drive, we'll be home in 15 minutes or so.  I'll
see you then."  He hung up the phone and climbed into the back seat with
Alex, leaving the front open for Milo.  "Get us out of here," he told Nick
and leaned back.  He had been feeling relieved and victorious until he
discovered the news of the uninvited guest, not his mother of course, just
Sloan.  His mother was always welcome.

Sloan watched Julia with irritation that grew when she started whispering.
"Miss Walker, did it ever occur to you that I might wish to speak with
Derek?"
