Dreading the answer she would get, Amber asked,
"So, you think I'm going to get twisted up in this,
huh?" She knew she was missing bits of the story, and
thought that perhaps if there was no reason for her to
know, she wouldn't have been told about it at all.
Wishing there were some way to answer that would make her friend feel
better without having it be a lie, Kristin settled for a small grin and
said lightly, "Well, with Cross you just don't know. But really, I
don't see any reason for either of us to get dragged into it. After
all, you just met Julia."
Leading Amber back to the kitchen and the munchies that she and
Philip had left out, she turned serious.
"Help yourself." Wondering how she could subtly bring up the topic
of Jane, she admitted there wasn't an easy way to do it, so, jumping
right in, she looked at Amber. "Okay. Now that we have a bit of time
alone, what's going on with Jane?"
