It's hard to say whether disk life will be extended, my guess would be that spinning the disk up and down a lot shortens life more than extends it. Notebook drives are designed for lots of spin up/down cycles so that should be an academic issue. In my configuration I have my drive spin down after 20 minutes when attached to AC and 2 minutes on battery.
In my setup laptop_mode changes the power mode on the wireless adapter and screen backlight level on AC versus battery in addition to the disk tweaks.
