@ Kelly :
A zillion zillion thanks for the suggested workaround. Indeed blacklisting
pcmcia modules prevent the high wake-ups from occurring. (As of now, more than
4 days of uptime and I haven't seen it, so I guess its not too early to
conclude.) I am especially thankful because it was almost impossible for me
track down the cause, given that once the problem occurs, it can't be reverted
by simply unloading the modules.

@ Jan :
All I can say is look for minimizing shared irqs and possibly another cpufreq
governor. Best wishes (I really mean it, although it has been more like a wild
goose chase ;).

@ Rafał Krypa :
Thanks for (re)starting the thread!

@ Arjan :
As for your suggestion for disabling AMT, at least for me, this hp notebook's
bios setup is absolutely featureless, forget about something like amt - so much
that it makes me wonder why is a "bios setup" there at first place ;).

Thanks,
Hirakendu.

It's hard to say whether disk life will be extended, my guess would be
that spinning the disk up and down a lot shortens life more than extends
it. Notebook drives are designed for lots of spin up/down cycles so
that should be an academic issue. In my configuration I have my drive
spin down after 20 minutes when attached to AC and 2 minutes on battery.

In my setup laptop_mode changes the power mode on the wireless adapter
and screen backlight level on AC versus battery in addition to the disk
tweaks. That definitely affects battery life.
