The 8 pin port is not a modem on the Duo. If your Duo has an internal modem (most of them have the 14.4 PowerBook Express modem), you will find it by folding down the right leg on the back of the Duo. When you fold the legs down, the left one reveals the AC Adapter port, while the right reveals either an RJ11 jack, or a blank plastic cover for modemless Duos.
