>It sounds like he has an Australian (and/or European) version which utilizes an
external dongle to provide a phone connection. This dongle plugs into the 8
pin port... It won't work with North American phone systems though, I think
due to differences in line voltage.

I was never able to get the dongle to work on my European duo (here in the
US). I was able to use the internal 14.4, however, when I was hooked up to a
dock (using the dock's pass-thru RJ11 port, of course).

(3) One more option:
Leave the duo hooked up to a mini-dock. Won't add much weight and you'll
then have all the ports, including SCSI! You'll have the pass-thru port for
the modem if you want to use the internal 14.4. You'll also have 2 serial
ports, allowing you to set up an external modem and a printer at the same
time (not having to reconfigure all the time using the duo's own *shared*
modem/printer port...a pain).

If you do use an external modem, don't expect high speeds even from a 56k.
The duo is designed for 14.4 and anything over that gets bottlenecked. A 56k
modem works, it is just slower than what you may find on other Macs.

More info on the DuoList, previously mentioned. Great info available there!
