Fire up Zterm and type atz and hit the return key.

If you get 'ok' and the prompt back the modem is working, allegedly.

type at&F0 This should set your modem to factory defaults.

type atdt nnnnnnn where nnnnnnn is the phone number you're dialing. What 
happens?

Your modem may be broken, or it may just not be
