That sounds like the chimes of death.  Were they kind of sour notes that would belong 
in a funeral?  My 540C makes that sound from time to time.  I just yank out both 
batteries and the adaptor and hold down the apple, option, ctrl and power buttons for 
a few seconds and then boot the sucker again.  Disconnecting all power from it is the 
main thing, though I think.  It also might be wise to walk away from it for a minute 
or two while it is disconnected.  This gives you both a chance to breathe and lessens 
the chance of an airborn powerbook. ;)
