On a duo, the 8 tones (four ascending then four descending) means a
memory fault has been detected. But, on my Duo 280c I often get those
tones since I replaced the Express modem with a Global Village modem,
and after just putting in in, or just taking it out of the duo dock. The
cure has always been to simply start it again. Therefor, my conclusion
is that the tones do not necessarily mean what they are supposed to mean.
