As an owner of a 5300cs (and soon a 5300ce), I have often wondered if I could use a Li-ion battery in one... or even track down the original Sony Li-ion batteries these were supposed to ship with. I've asked here about whether or not they should work, and the consensus in the responses I got was this:
At best, the batteries will power the 5300/190 series books if previously fully charged. They will not recharge, and the Mac OS won't recognize them. Ever since that 1st recall, Li-ion batteries in the 5300/190 series are unsupported, IIRC. If they work at all, you are lucky. The Mac OS won't recharge a Li-ion battery in your 190's battery bay, but it may deplete/run off power supplied by one (as you are experiencing). I understand System 7.5.2 _did_ work fully w/ Li-ion batteries on the 5300/190, but who runs that anymore, eh? Too buggy. Subsequent OS releases have disabled support for the batteries (since they were recalled anyway, shouldn't have been an issue). I guess your 190cs doesn't know exactly what to do w/ the Li-ion 3400 battery - it's NOT the same as the original 5300 Li-ions, so maybe it 1/2-way works. How much run time do you get off it? Try fully charging it and then clocking it with Battery Amnesia or something... Now the NiMH batteries of the same form factor, OTOH, do work across the entire 190/5300/3400/G3 Kanga line, though they probably give poor run time at the high end. So your 190cs NiMH battery will work correctly in your 3400, but probably won't keep it running as long as the Li-ion battery. HTH?
