NetBSD will run on the PowerBook 170.

You'll need at least 4 MB RAM (better to have the maximum of 8 MB), and more
disk space than you currently have available (at least 80-100 MB:

Aside from that, the internal video isn't supported, so you'll have to run a
terminal to the serial port. Not a very portable solution.

OpenBSD reports that the 170 is "fully supported", however, OpenBSD/mac68k
is a derivative of NetBSD, so it surprises me that they claim full support
while NetBSD doesn't. I've never tried OpenBSD, and their Mac68K support
seems less robust than NetBSD's. There is no port maintainer for
OpenBSD/mac68k, while NetBSD/mac68k is a very active port that is kept
up-to-date with the main release (i386) of NetBSD.

IMHO, the nicest solution to run a portable 68K BSD machine is to run NetBSD
1.5 on a PowerBook 5x0. You'll need a full-blown 68040, though. Get yourself
a nice used PB520 or 540, rip out the old 68LC040 and replace it with a
68040 from your friendly neighbourhood electronics parts shop. Bump it up to
80 or 90 MHz while you're at it, and you're in business.
