I tried to get MacMinix on one of my powerbooks, but unfortunately it doesn't like 32-bit memory addressing! MacOS 7.5 doesn't have a switch to turn it off, and 7.0 doesn't work on my Duo- so I pulled out another Duo with 7.1, but decided to look at MiNT. It doesn't seem to mind 32 bit addressing (woohoo! I can still use more than eight megs!) and everything else seems to work-- after I got it installed. The installation script of the version I have had some problems- it seems to assume that some functions are already there, when they aren't. It isn't an impossible install, I just had to poke around a bit. Like Mac-Minix, it doesn't do TCP/IP. GCC is available, as well as a bunch of other languages (a couple lisps, modula, and others). I restarted my Duo with MacOS 7.1, set 24-bit addressing and restarted, and MacMinix seems to do well. It has a much more complete set of commands (programs) out of the box, and seems nicely Unixy. MiNT seems to be a better choice than MacMinix, unless you want to study the OS code-- Minix was designed to be easy to study and understand, after all. MiNT only seems to be single user. -- Dana [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
