NetBSD! NETBSD!!!!!

"Of course I run NetBSD" since version 1.4.2. My IIci loves it. My Apple
Network Server will probably be switched to it, and I have a Q605 with a
real '040 that will probably be set up with it.

It's also tremendously more mature and tested than Linux on the 68k Macs;
it's been around for almost a decade.

That *is* awfully small, although a very rudimentary set might be squeezed
in there. Alternatively, get an external SCSI drive and allocate that all
to NetBSD. Hook that up and run the Booter off that. The IIci is happy with
a 2GB drive, so it doesn't need to be particularly large.

A bigger worry is the RAM. You will need that full 8MB available on the 170
to get things to any useful state (4MB will boot, but you probably won't be
able to do much more than that). 8MB is cramped, but functional; gcc
should work on this, although it will churn a lot.

My IIci has 128MB and it never swaps anymore ;-)
