Yes, indeed, AirPort says it requires a G3. What it really looks
for, though, is CardBus slots (or more accurately, Texas Instruments
based 32-bit PC Card slot controllers).

AirPort does not now, nor will it ever, run on a 190, 5300, or 1400.
Unpacking it with Tome Viewer will allow you to manually "install"
AirPort on a 2400, 3400, or Kanga G3. You can do this on a 190-1400
too, but the software will not run (I have tried this - I've even
poked around w/ ResEdit some to see if there was some resource that
told the software what to look for... I never found it though).

The 190, 5300, and 1400 are all TREX-based 16-bit PCMCIA slots.
AirPort expects you to have a 32-bit slot, so no matter what OS you
are running, AirPort will not work on these machines.

As for AirPort v. WaveLAN drivers, I find AirPort to be much
superior. For me, it's not just a question of which is easier to
setup, but which provides more functionality. In addition to
providing a strength gauge, AirPort allows you to see which networks
are available, not to just guess-and-pick at a network name.
Furthermore, AirPort allows you to switch networks without restarting
your computer. If you've entered a network name into the WaveLAN
Setup control panel, you will have to restart your computer before
you can access a new network. This really stinks for mobile users
like myself! Finally, there is an AirPort status module for the
Apple Location Manager (which I don't use - IIRC, all it really does
is turn AirPort on and off, plus, it's 3rd Party software), but there
is nothing close to a switch for the WaveLAN Setup control panel.

Peace,
Drew
